 | | Located within the Chianti Classico DOCG area, Montemasso was one of the first two Tuscan estates to be acquired by the Folonari family, and for decades this estate has been one of the pillars of Ruffino's grape production. The grapes cultivated in the estate vineyards tell the story of wines such as Riserva Ducale and Riserva Ducale Oro.
Montemasso currently features 29 hectares of vineyards, cultivated on the steep slopes surrounding the hermitage. The vineyards are, in fact, the first thing visitors see of the estate, when they climb up the small dirt road which leads from the main road up to the antique heremitage, through vineyards, olive groves, and wooded areas.
Sangiovese is the main grape variety, but agronomic researches on the estate have led to the conclusion that Cabernet Sauvignon also finds ideal environmental growing conditions in the estate's arid, marny soil.
The exposure is ideal, south, south-west, and the vineyards are positioned at an altitude of 350-400 metres above sea level. The lower positioned vineyards are reserved for Sangiovese, while the higher altitudes host the vineyards dedicated to Cabernet Sauvignon. This choice was made in order to favour the structure, the intensity, and the elegance of the grapes.
