The vineyards of Greppone Mazzi are completely dedicated to the cultivation of Sangiovese Grosso, or "Brunello," as they say in Montalcino.
The vineyards are exposed to a typical Mediterranean climate with hot summer days and cool, breezy nights, resulting in a considerable day-night temperature swing - an important element for the development of fragrant perfumes in the grapes.
The altitude of the vineyards also favours a long maturation cycle for the grapes. A gradual maturation process encourages the development of an ideal balance between tannins, acidity, fruit, and sugar contents and lays the basis for the production of a Brunello which excels not only in structure and longevity, but also in elegance and finesse.
The proximity of the sea, only approximately 30 kilometres away, also has a beneficial influence on the vineyards. The sea breeze helps keep the clusters clean and healthy - an element which is particularly important in the area of "dei Greppi" where harvest usually doesn't take place before October.
The vineyards are currently subject to a replanting project which has already seen over 50% of the older vines being replaced by new clones, selected directly in the best estate vineyards by Ruffino's agronomic team. |
