Santedame

A Ruffino estate in the Chianti Classico area

The villa

The imponent Santedame villa is surrounded by a lush garden, guarded by a gracious statue of a feminine figure, which in all its frail elegance and sweet curves seems to perfectly symbolize the charm and artistic value of the estate.

The fields on the steep slopes around the villa are yet today a living picture of how life used to be on this estate in other eras. The many fruit trees were not planted here for the fun of eating one's own fruit, but for the necessity of being as self-sufficient as possible. 100 years ago the road to the nearest town was long and difficult!

A large wooden door leads to Santedame's tasting room where Ruffino's guests can sit down and relive the charm of Santedame's landscape, enjoying a glass of Romitorio. But when the weather permits it the perfect place for tasting the estate wines is sitting around the small, round stone table in the corner of the garden, while enjoying the breathtaking view over the Chianti Classico hills.

The long, winding dirt road which leads from the privincial road to the centre of Santedame shows the estate's last treasure. In fact, this road runs through a wide cypress tree forest. It is rare to see this tree grow spontaneously in nature and because of the rareness of this forest it has been declared a protected area by the European Union.
