Greppone Mazzi

A Ruffino estate in the Brunello di Montalcino area

The history

When the Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo visited Montalcino in the late 1500s, he is known to have stated: "The best houses were those of the families Tamanti, Vegni, Clementi, Canali . . ." The Clementis purchased the estate in 1600 and it remained in the patrician family's hands for centuries. (It passed to the last male heir's daughter, Giuseppina nei Mazzi, in 1868.)

The estate joined the Tuscan Estates of Ruffino in 1984. Greppone Mazzi was Ruffino's first purchase outside the Chianti Classico territory and with this event the world's most famous Chianti producer extends its production to Brunello.

The choice fell on this particular estate because of its position in the most antique area of the Montalcino DOCG.

In fact, Greppone Mazzi showed a quality potential which was perfectly in line with the production style which up to that date has been the exclusive trademark of Ruffino's Chianti Classico's.

Ruffino came to Montalcino with the desire to produce a Brunello di Montalcino with a strong territorial and historical imprint.

The Greppone Mazzi Estate is a model representation of Ruffino's production philosophy: A small wine-producing estate with an artisanal management which allows Ruffino's wine makers to have a meticulous quality control of the entire production process.
