When the Grand Duke Pietro Leopoldo visited Montalcino in the late 1500s, he is known to have stated: "The best houses were those of the families Tamanti, Vegni, Clementi, Canali . . ." The Clementis purchased the estate in 1600 and it remained in the patrician family's hands for centuries. (It passed to the last male heir's daughter, Giuseppina nei Mazzi, in 1868.)
Ruffino came to Montalcino with the desire to produce a Brunello di Montalcino with a strong territorial and historical imprint.
The Greppone Mazzi Estate is a model representation of Ruffino's production philosophy: A small wine-producing estate with an artisanal management which allows Ruffino's wine makers to have a meticulous quality control of the entire production process.
